This film was the result of 7 years of hard work. Writing the script, raising the money, securing the cast, shooting/editing the film, securing distribution…and then promoting it in every way possible. Nevertheless, Dorian Missick (NBC’s “The Cape”), Zoe Saldana (“Avatar”, “Star Trek”), and Hill Harper (CBS’ “CSI: NY”) made the directing easy for me in this romantic-dramedy about a struggling actor fed up with stereotypical roles. As Cool (Missick) pumps gas to make ends meet, he collides with his ex-fiancé (Saldana) after 3 years of silence. She is getting married in 36 hours. As the clock ticks on his life, love, and career, Cool finds he must take on the biggest “role” of his life to win her back.
It was an honor to direct this feature documentary on the first black tank battalion in WWII. We interviewed 11 soldiers who served in the unit, as well as General Colin Powell and numerous military experts. What the Tuskegee Airmen were to the skies, the 761st was to land, as they were requested by General George S. Patton to assist with heavy fighting during the Battle of the Bulge. The soldiers of the 761st Tank Battalion fought for 183 consecutive days, in six countries, and with great success despite a fifty-percent casualty rate. They were commonly referred to as “Eleanor Roosevelt’s Niggers”, but proved themselves to be America’s Men in what we now call the “Greatest Generation”. Emmy-Award Winning actor Andre Braugher narrates.
